D²OL and a linux newbie. Help

Ok...

So I upgraded my main machine and I happen to have a couple of parts to build another system. Nothing special.. generic PCI video 1 gig athlon. 64MB of ram I think...

I wanted to throw it all together and install linux. I'm currently downloading both Redhat 8 and Mandrake 9 to try out. Keeping in mind that I have never installed Linux before, which do you reccomend? The soul purpose of this computer will be to run D²OL and to play around in Linux.

How difficult is Linux to install in the first place? I've played just a bit with Knoppix, and that is it.

Any advice before I start?

I ran Mandrake 8.1 with D2OL on about 8 machines while we were in the race to the top. Mandrake is no problem to install so I can imagine Linux Red Hat is just as simple. The Mandrake 8.1 worked out of the box for most machine setups. I did have to use more modern Network cards (PCI VS ISA) for ease of installation. I had ZERO experience with NIX OS so it can work out fairly well with standard equipment. Most of mine had generic stuff, SCSI controllers and drives and older video cards like Matrox G100, G200, and SIS. Most were Intel boards with a couple VIA. Mandrake was a lot faster back then for DDOL but I dont know about now.

I also run Mandrake and D2OL on an old clunker. I had no problems installing either Mandrake or D2OL.

sounds like you guys have had good luck with Mandrake... 9 is supposed to be pretty good... maybe I will go with that.

If I had 9 I woulda used it, but I had 8.1 laying here someone sent me and it worked fine for installing and setting up D2OL and forgetting it. I sure as hell wouldnt use it for an everyday OS though.. too lazy to do all that command line crap when I can point and click with MS 😛

I think that Mandrake9 and redhat8 are a lot more point and click if I'm not mistaken.

Most important aspect to any distrobution is going to be support and documentation. Having a GUI on any distro is a matter of installing and configuring.

I ran RH8.0 from downloads and no docs and was able to install the gui with no problems... pretty straight forward 🙂
