Get a floor pump with gauge and check your tires frequently. Many times flats are caused by tires being underinflated (these are called pinch flats).

All tires lose air over time, some hold air better than others. The Continental GP4000 is what I usually run on my road bike, they lose very little air over the course of a week.

a floor pump is great for home - its what i use. But for on the road, a C02 pump is much smaller, lighter and faster then a decent floor pump.

I live exactly 3 miles from work. Takes me 15-20 minutes. Dedicated bike lane on busy roads, and right to full lane on smaller streets. I have front and back flashing LED lights, but I don't wear a helmet. I have a cheapy mountain bike I bought from a sporting goods store years ago. If I have some money, I thinking about upgrading to a lighter bike.

I have a Planet Bike Beamer 3 LED Bicycle Light and Planet Bike Blinky "3" 3-Led Rear Bicycle Light.

 Of course, I wasn't advocating carrying a floor pump around on you when you're riding.

When I was commuting regularly by bike I kept one at home and one at work.
