I always thought cyclists were like the Rasta cyclist in Thelma & Louise who blew "smoke" on the "Nazi" cop trapped in the car ;)

NC has one of the highest fatality rates for cyclists . . . trying to thin the herd of Kerry supporters.

I should not be suprised if this mirrors the general outcome of the coming election. Cyclists are less politically sensitive than posters on P/N or OT for that matter. The issues many cyclists are concerned with are more local, i.e. providing dedicated cycling lane and such. In a way, reflects my feelings. I dislike Kerry by about 53 percent, but Bush more, so Kerry wins :)

I always cast my vote for the bike-lane party :D

I've found that on my two sport specific forums, www.slowtwitch.com and the above forum, the debate is not as well-tuned as it is here. That's probably because politics is OT in those forums. But, I suspect they aren't as well informed because they don't have the sort of people we have here who will scour the ends of the earth to come up with the RIGHT answer. :)

Conjur? BBD? Even HS!

BBD:

I think Bush is creating Democrats faster than we are killing them on the roads. I seem to recall that in 2002 we killed about 175 cyclistst nationwide. Bush is RUNNING OVER REPUBLICANS left and right. :)

I am an avid cyclist, and in some of the places I've lived (Oklahoma and Washington in particular), I definitely feel like a marginalized minority! I've actually had more curses and near-misses with cars here in Washington than anywhere else I've lived.

That is why I gave up riding my bicycle in the Boston area many years ago. I have unfortunately lost a lot of ground physically as a result.

Never fear though! I have new tires on my Cannondale, and will be back on the road in rural NY this weekend.

Phear me! LOL!

Should be a nice place to ride (at least when there aren't feet of snow on the ground!), and you are ideally located to go get a personalized fitting for a swanky new Serotta if you find yourself getting into cycling.

That is sweet!

Unfortunately, other priorities make such a purchase unwise at this moment. My daughter has outgrown her bike, and that is the first cycling priority. That is one sweet ride though I must say.

Oh, envy me Don :D

That is 5 miles or so from where I live :D

My good friend and neighbor keeps trying to talk me into getting a road bike. No way. I prefer to keep it in the dirt. Looking to upgrade from my Schwinn Homegrown to a full suspension bike.....too much wear and tear is takin' its toll (on me, not the bike).

Edit for clarity (LOL, ya can't upgrade a hard tail to a softie......)

Whoa, Winston, DUDE! You have got to hit those trails beaucoup. That looks stunning. I'm tempted to go up there just to do some training.

Keep it up. Consistency is the key. Two-three days per week and you'll start finding you have muscles. :)

Down here in Florida I don't ride on the roads. I do the trails or ride my Computrainer. I just finished 50 miles of Ironman Utah. :)

I get a 1.5 mile warmup from my garage to here. It's the right kind of trail for a fat, but coordinated, guy like myself.

Edit: Bummer, the above link doesn't take you directly to the trail I ride. You've got to click on the "mountain biking" link in the upper left hand to get to the trail descriptions. The trail is Highland.

I was going to say (before Corn spoke up), wha? No moutain bikers? I wonder what the demographics are for the "ride in the dirt" crowd are?

I generally ride here and description here. UP Haleakala you say? Oh man, I'm in no condition for that. Maybe DOWN, but not up. Hell, does ANYONE (besides the iron men) go UP?

Deal Monkey: The first link isn't working, but second looks pretty placid. Not much downhill there! How are you gonna' face plant on that? :)

I suspect most mountain bikers are Libertarians.
