Hey all,

I'm looking to start cycling and I've pretty much settled on cross bike since I'll primarily be on the road, but like the option of hitting a light trail. I've heard great thinks about redline bikes, but this looks to be a custom build, so I figure, like the components of my rig, its only worth as much as the sum of its parts, so how much would you pay for this bike if you were in my shoes? how much are the combined parts worth? is this a great setup?

I know its risky to buy off of ebay but I'm going to buy from this guy locally, so I'll be able to see it and ride it before I buy it. Also I'm 5' 9.5" with a 29.5" inseam and from what I've read redline bikes run about 2cm bigger than other road bikes.

Thanks.

it may be on the large side. the top tube is almost a 55cm. you will probably be a little stretched. the geometry is pretty slack too (72, 73). you could probably get by with a 80 or 90 mm stem. you are probably closer to a 52. check out the fit calculator on competitive cyclist. I'm 5'11 with a 32 inseam and ride a 55.

Even if you're thinking of buying online you should go into a local bike store (not a sporting goods store that happens to carry bikes, look for a store that only sells bikes). They'll set you up with the right size so you know what you're looking at. You may also be surprised about the prices there, they usually throw in a year or more of normal tune ups.

thanks guys for the help. Yeah I went to a LBS and they had no 'cross bikes, and were selling to me from a trek and redline catalog... this threw me off because, if I wanted to look at pictures I might as well buy online. Whatever happened to trying before you buy? Anyways the other factor is cost. BTW neither of you guys gave me a value for the bike... how much is it worth/would you pay for this?

If you are a novice to bikes, do not buy online where you can't ride it. You have no idea how it will fit you.

How about your local Craigslist?

actually, I will be able to ride it before I buy since this guy is local to me. The question is if I should buy and at what price should I offer.

it's a good price for that bike. the frame sells for 350 new + 105 crank and a dura ace rd is not bad. doesn't mean it will fit, unless you have some seriously long monkey arms.

That's not a bad deal but it isn't great either. Just curious, why do you want a cyclocross bike vs a road bike? Unless you're going to change out tires between road riding and the light trail riding you "might" be doing, I'd just stick to a road bike with road tires.
