Better how? Burn more fat? More emphasis on cardiovascular health? Impact on knees? How sexy it makes Fausto look in spandex?

Running is a quicker cardio workout because it's less efficient than cycling (if that makes sense). It's also cheaper and more convenient. It is, however, hard on your joints and you can't do 30mph. :D

It's much less impact on your body, especially your knees but you do risk getting hit by a car or other injuries if you ride off-road. Overall though, I'd say cycling is better for you.

A lot of motion during running is wasted. While cycling, your legs only turn the wheels. During running, you have to push yourself forward and up, because you can't roll.

Less efficient means you work harder over a given time period and probably end up burning more calories. Running's the better deal if you have limited time. It's possible to burn upwards up 800 kcal per hour on a bike, but it's going to hurt....trust me.

techinincally, a bike is a more effiecent machine than the human body. However, due to the fact that the human body is powering the bike, he is most likely wrong. Perhaps the operation of the bike allows more of the mechinical energy of the leg motion to be transfered to movement? I'm not a mech eng. major, don't ask me.

Unless you're REALLY uncoordinated. ;)

I think what he is saying is that you can get your hear rate up quicker while running becuase it takes more energy to run a certain distance then to bike it. In general, you will have to go either much faster or much longer to get the same workout on a bike as running, mostly due to the wonderful employment of gears.

After all, most of us aren't Lee Majors!

Basically all of your energy propels you forward on a bike. When running, you're propelling yourself up and forward....you're also supporting all of your own weight whereas you have three contact points on a bike.

I meant feet/butt/hands; 3, 5, 6, or 7 depending how you break it down. :p

I actually like running, it just doesn't like me. I was a speedskater as a kid and then a cyclist. My body freaks out when I try to run. :(

I just end up with incredibly sore legs and hips. I gave up on it after attempting to use it for offseason cross-training a few years.
