I just updated my counterstrike with steam and the graphics are good and all but I get lag every 3 seconds... my ping is about 50 so i know it not my internet connection and no its not my graphics card because I have a radeon 9500 softmodded to 9700. My old cs played super smoothe and now I'm saddened cause I can't play my favorite game. :(

I also uninstalled it then reinstalled the full update and no luck ... please help a fellow CS fan!

type net_graph 3 in your console and see if you get loss, choke, or excessive ms. if you do, lower:

cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate
cl_rate
rate

ok I checked and the ms jumped ever time it lagged ... sometimes hitting 700 ms then going back to 0

I got an occassional loss, and the choke jumped with the lag also, hitting around 30

What values should I type in for the cl_XXXXXX commands?

ms = milliseconds = response time between client and servar

Anything below 200 ms = bueno

I know someone who has cyclic-ish lag in 1.6. He's using a GF4Ti, though.

Hopefully they will fix that when 1.6 comes out. And YES, it's NOT final yet. Steam is final, but 1.6 is still beta, and should be final in about 2 weeks, which is why WON will be taken offline.

Those settings vary a LOT depending on the connection. Mine is very bad if I set it as high as 100. I have cable and I've got cmd at 70, update at 40. However, my rate is best at 15000-20000. So try to play around with those settings, RIGorous.

cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate
rate

And make sure you've got your netgraph 1 on so you can see the difference. Green line, no red/yellow = good.

What kind of connection do you have & just how do you gauge how high or low you should have those cvars set at?

There might be some way to do calculations to determine some approximate values, but it's much easier just to play around with the settings. Start at maybe 30, and move up in 5's or whatever while looking at your netgraph. When you think you've got them to a good place, play and see if it's better. For the rate value, generally I've found that something between 4000-7000 is good for DSL, 9000-15000 is good for Cable. However, those vary a LOT, so the only way to know for sure is to try it!
