Cyclic redundancy

While installing WindowsXP on a new drive, (RMA from WD), I got almost to the end and received this error. The cd *looks* to be in good shape, have tried cleaning it, and retried several times, but still no dice. Is there a better way of cleaning, (trick), the cd? Call Micro$oft? Try and pull the data manually? See if I can borrow an install disk? Download some kinda software? Try a slower/older/IDE drive? Will Micro$oft replace a damaged install disk?
I have had this happen once before, and on the third, or forth time, and a swift kick :sneaky: the data was transferred.

CRC doesnt always mean its the disk, could be the hard drive or memory. Run something like memtest86+ or goldmem and then run your hard drive manuf diag tools.

I had a similar issue once. I solved it by making another physical copy of the Windows CD (I used Nero which read the CD fine) and installing using said copy.

Hmmm, had no idea you could, burn/copy/clone an install disk, especially an OS.

Hard drive was new, and tested. This was not a check sum error. memory has been in use for quite some time. Running third party apps. on a computer without an OS is a bit problematic, though not impossible. No my friend, this is/was, what I/others thought it was.

Even if the memory has been running forever, still check it. Ive seen bad memory cause all sorts of weird errors, especially like this. Better to check and be sure than to pull your hair out over weird issues that pop up here and there
