Cutting heatsinks

I want some RAM sinks for my vid card, but the amount they charge on cooling sites is ridiculous. I have alot of old heatsinks and was thinking I could just cut them up.

I'm not the most handy of fellows when it comes to tooling things (only because I lack tools) but what might be the best way to cut them?

Alternatively, there's a thread on really cheap heatsinks (dimes a piece for some) on the Hot Deals forum.

yeah I saw that, but its a minimum 25$ order. thats lame.

yeah you can cut your own ramsinks. I've done it a few times myself. You do need a dremel though.

Just take a small heatsink measure it to cut so it fits on the ram chips perfectly. Buy some thermal tape and BAM ramsinks. Although unless you got access to a dremel you would be better off buying some.

hacksaw. dremel is entirely too much - overkill. unless the sink is small, then you need a vise to hold the heatsink, as your fingers will be a bit too close for comfort.

at least, if these heatsinks are aluminum (if they're old, 99% they are)

Hacksaw?

You're crazy.

I cut up an old PentiumPro heatsink with a dremel... it took forever to even cut out 2 sections.

Hacksaw is not a realistic option.

I cut mine with a crappy 15kRPM cordless black&decker and did it fairly fast. If you can get your hands on a 35kRPM corded it would go through them like a hot knife through butter.
