I'll be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing yet, so I'll start with a basic question.

Is it possible for me to grant access to my computer to a known person via the internet? I think this is where the CuteFTP (or similar) program comes into play?

If it is possible, please explain or provide a link to instructions so I can set this up. I'm not afraid to try to learn something new. Sometimes it works and sometimes it bites me in the behind because I get in over my head.

Please help if you can. Thanks!!

FTP will only allow you to transer files. CuteFtp is a client side software. You need FTP server software (something like Bulletprof or WAR FTP). I do not think this is what you are looking for tho. You need something like PCAnywhere,GotoMyPC, or Windows Remote Desktop if looking to give remote control capabilities.

I'm looking for a program where I can give access to certain folders on my computer to certain people via the internet. Kind of like a personal Peer to Peer program, only you're able to browse what's there instead of searching for it. If that's what those programs then I'll try those. I'll see what I can find out about them. Thanks for your quick reply!

Yep, you can get a third part ftp server but if you're running XP, there's a way to do it as a service. Check here for more details. I never did it myself but I've used serve U ftp server as well as G6 ftp server. Both are basically the same and work well with the ability to secure the connection to only known users via username/pass.

1. You need an FTP server program to be set on your Hosting computer.

Here you can download free ftp program.

GuildFTP

Here is setting instructions.

GuildFTPd Getting Started.

2. If your IP is dynamic you need a service to point the Internet to your host computer.

Some of these services are free and they will provide you with their program that notifies their server your current IP.

Example: http://zonedit.com/

If you want to do a Good Job and understand all the issues involved the following site will provide you with very good info.
