Alright, so I recently got DSL and bought the aforementioned router. So now I can't get incoming file requests on ICQ. I know I can setup the router to allow for specific exceptions but I don't know how exactly to go about it, like ports and such.

Support Page For BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router

In particular, it states that

Q: Does the Cable/DSL router support ICQ send file?
A: Yes, with the follwing fix:
ICQ menu-> preference -> connections tab->
check "I am behind a firewall or proxy " and set the firewall time out to 80 seconds in firewall setting, then Internet user can send file to user behind router for the first time connection!

Does that sound like what you want? I never use ICQ or AIM so I'm not too familiar with them. If not, maybe the answer is somewhere else on their help page.

Hmm, I was experiencing the same problem (albeit with the 8 port model) and I'd just given up and resorted to putting myself into the DMZ when I wanted to send/receive a file via ICQ.

I'll have to check this out! ;)

This is all pretty alien to me but I know my 11 year old uses assorted messaging programs and she doesn't have any problems. Of course, we have one of the good routers, a Netgear :) Or, maybe she never sends files. I've never tried anything with DMZ, but doesn't that only work for one PC at a time or something? It looked like that special applications port list link was showing how to do it for as many users as you want.

Yeah, that's the thing, it will only work for one comp at a time. Luckily my roommates haven't moved in yet. ;)

But I'll definitely have to play around with that port list when I get home this evening. Seems a lot better than a solution I read elsewhere that involved opening a huge number of ports... I was a little skeptical about that idea.

Trillian has its own web page, which includes a community forum where you can ask questions. Just skimming through it, it looks like they have a couple thousand messages asking about file sharing. Maybe the answer you want is buried in there somewhere. In any event, I'd suggest posting your query there too, you're more likely to find someone who knows the answer.

Yeah, I've been looking through there. I have to wait till I get home to try out some of the options.

Just skimming through it, it looked like a 100 people were asking "How do I send files?" with the typical response being "Yeah, I want to know how to do that too!" But then, what do you expect from a program that is on version 0.73? :) Good luck.

You need to find out what ports the program is using for filesharing, then forward them to the NAT address of the computer you want to receive them in the router. That should do it.
Very dangerous placing any computer in a DMZ without locking it down with a software firewall.

I have ZoneAlarm Pro, so I wasn't too worried about being in the DMZ, but I would prefer to just do it from behind the router. ;)

It just occured to me that I have a friend who's fairly well versed in networking; and I remember him mentioning to me in the past about how he got Trillian to work from behind his router. I'll ask him and see what ports he forwarded, and pass along the info. :)

Alright, here's what I did. I enabled forwarding for ports 20000-20019 to only the IP of my machine. In Trillian->Prefs->ICQ->Misc under direct connection I told it to use the aforementioned TCP listen ports for incoming events. Problem solved.

Told ya ;) I even had to do it to hook my XbOX up to gamespy. IF ZA pro is running on that box, their may be times when you have to open ports on that too!
