Custom upgrade your Audigy!

If you've assembled a computer, congrats, you have the skills of today's 8 year olds. What better to have in your custom rig than -- a custom Audigy -- that you modified yourself. The Audigy is lacking on sound quality, why not improve it?

You can do a simple upgrade of your Audigy by replacing the opamp chip. The Audigy uses a cheap, crappy one, resulting in sub-par sound. You can replace it with an AD8620 by Analog Devices, one of the best opamps available. You can even get these for free with Analog's sample program.

Try it out!

I don't have an Audigy, so I wouldn't know 😉 My sound card is a Terratec EWX24/96, I'd have to take a look at it to see what I can upgrade.

All you need is a soldering iron and about an hour

Yes this may be something well within the range of anyone with intermediate electronic skills. However, the fact remains that the card is still stuck at a crappy 16/44.1.

Cheers!

If you're listening on Z560, Klipsch, you probably won't be able to tell the difference. If you have good headphones, or are connecting your sound card to a good home audio setup, then you'll notice a difference in the clarity and frequency response.

It's free to do, so if you have the tools and looking for a little upgrade, why not?

You audio-quality freaks really annoy me. The audio quality on a stock Audigy is fine, especially for a computer system where you pretty much just play MP3s anyway. I mean, jeez, you guys actually think spending $250,000 for an ultra high-end audio system is a noticeable improvement over a $20,000 somewhat-high-end system. If your hearing is that sensitive, I feel sorry for you mutants.

Hey, if you can't tell the difference, you're the one with the hearing problem.😛

...Touche! But I'd rather buy a freaking house than get a little bit of pleasure from that oh-so-minute audible difference.
