Custom tank for turtle?

We saved a turtle from being BBQ from my fiance's uncle. He likes to eat turtle and caught about 10 turtles and we asked him for the smallest one. Anyways, he's not small compared to your ordinary pet turtle. He's about 5-6 inches long. Anyways, I would really like to keep him and I'm thinking of building a custom tank. Sure I can buy one of those 20 gallon fish tank, but while it's deep enough, its not that wide. So, I'm thinking of going to home depot and find some glass. Do you think plexi glass would work?

I'm thinking about 5 feet wide by 2 feet deep.

one of my best friends is a turtle lover and he did exactly that he made a 8' x 8' tank for his 8 turtles, its fun to watch them swim around and play and chase gold fish in the tank. go for it, your turlte will be much happier.

It's not a snapping turtle is it? Around here aligator snappers are the kind people usually eat, and they get really large and aggressive. Make sure what kind it is before you go to a lot of trouble. You might be better off just letting it go.

i have no clue what it is. All I know is that it doesnt freaking eat what I give it nor does it try to bite me. I might let it go and buy fishes, but I wanna see the turtle swim around! 😀

Ameesh - what kind of glass did he use? How did he put it together?

Make sure you know what you have before building a habitat for it. You need to figure out what it eats and what it needs to be healthy.

Yeah, if it's a snapping turtle, you're technically not supposed to have them as pets I believe. My sister found one a few years ago in the yard, he wasn't much bigger than a silver dollar. She kept him in a tank for about a year until it was springtime and let him go.

Once they get large, they can be pretty mean. They'll take a finger off easily and can move pretty quickly. I'm guessing it's a snapping turtle, because that's what most people trap.

If it is a snapping turtle, it won't make much of a pet. I'd find a nice pond and let him go

What does his shell look like? Around the bottom edges, is it jagged or smooth? Does he have a high shell, or is it more of a "low profile" shell? A jagged, low profile shell is indicitive of a snapping turtle

I stand corrected. The first google result for "snapping turtle" results in this page:

I guess they do make OK pets. I'd rather not have a snapping turtle as a pet, personally, I try to keep my pets in two catagories. Either A)Loyal enough they won't bite my fingers off or B)Pets that can't bite my fingers off 😀

keep in mind plexiglass are easily scratched. i think its difficult to build a glass tank as you would need the frame/brace on top and bottom. but other than that all you need is silicone to glue them together. another choice is lexan plastic, virtually unbreakable compared to regular plexi.
