Custom mobile apps

I am thinking of getting a very simple app written for Android and iPhone. I assume when getting it into the appropriate app stores they do some checking of the app. I have no problem getting that done but I would also like to keep them on my PC and to, I believe, side load them if they should ever disappear from the stores. How hard is that? Having an app disappear from the Android store is what is prompting this.

You don't have to publish to a store. You also don't have to use google. If the app's libre, you could publish to f-droid or izzy(if there's a git page).
