Custom Firmware on PSP Fat

I have a friend of mine that asked about getting a custom firmware on his PSP. I modded mine a while back but don't remember the specifics of how I did it.

Anyways, he has a PSP1000-fat. It is currently running an official 3.80 firmware. I'm pretty sure I have to downgrade the FW and then I can run a M33 FW. Anybody familiar with this and what I have to do?

Thanks!

Check out PSPMOD.COM. I upgraded mine to a custom FW ages ago but don't remember all the steps or scenarios. This link might help some:

Thanks for the link but the problem is he has the official 3.80 firmware installed. From what I am reading Sony plugged up all the exploits in that FW so I have to downgrade it to put a custom FW on. It seems that I am going to need a pandora battery to do this unless there is another way around it.

Looks like this is the scenario:
get pandora battery
downgrade official 3.80FW to 1.5
upgrade to a dark Alex F. (3.90 M-33)
then upgrade to 5.50 M33
is this correct?

close .. AFAIK M33 firmware stops at 5.0x and there aren't any plans for a 5.50 or even a 6.0 release.

you need a magic memory stick and a pandora battery. YOu will need a modded psp for the pandora, IIRC

My psp is modded so that's ok. What's a magic memory stick? Where can I buy both the stick and battery??

If you have a modded PSP, then you need an extra battery (has to be a phat or even a PSP-2000 battery) then using windows you format any memory stick a certain way using a 3rd party app. THis stick will have the ability to turn your extra battery into a pandora battery.

There are a lot of places where you can get that info...

Try maxconsole

I'm pretty sure I know how to mod the psp but I need to get the pandora battery and magic memory stick. I don't want to mod my own batteries so I would prefer to buy it from someone that has already done so. I went to maxconsole but didn't see a tab where they were selling anything.

You do NOT need a pandora battery. You need to upgrade to - I believe - OFW 5.00. (OFW = Sony Official Firmware). 5.00 still has the HEN TIFF exploit available, so using ChickHEN and some patience, you then install CFW 5.00 m33. From there, you update to 5.50 GEN-D3 (I believe that's the latest and greatest).

I'll try to dig up the appropriate links, so wait for confirmation on the procedure if you want.

Correction: It appears ChickHEN is for OFW 5.03. Google term ChickHEN 5.03 Phat, and you should find what you need.

Thanks for this! So I need to upgrade to the OFW 5.03 first and then go with the ChickHen CFW?

Thanks everyone. I figured it out. Wasn't really complicated but had to realize that the ChickHen hack needed a couple of tries to get it to work. I successfully got it running on a 5.00 m33 CFW. Not sure if I want to go with the 5.50 GEN-D3 yet.

Sorry I didn't get back to your PM - that was exactly what I was going to mention.

By the way, now that you have m33 on there, you do know that you can make your pre-existing battery into a Pandora battery (and memory stick) and dick around with whatever FW you desire, don't you? :)

The only issue with GEN is that it doesn't run all of the homebrew that m33 does. What GEN does do is allow you to use the PSN store and also your backups of newer titles requiring FW 5.50 and 6.0 (carefully worded of course). GEN does let you use homebrew, but compatibility is an issue sometimes.

Yeah, I know I can hard mod the battery but I only have 1 so if I mess it up then I'll have to find a new one. I'd rather just buy one online as they were only $6 or something.

The hack wasn't for me, it was for a friend of mine. If he wants me to put the GEN on there then I can do that. I have the m33 on mine as well and its been working well. If I have a game that needs the newer FW then I usually look online for one that has the [fix]. Thanks for your help!
