Custom Built Linux File Server

Greetings there,

I'm looking how to go about building a custom built linux file server for use at my workplace. I think I can build something for less than the cost of a 4 drive Blackarmor Seagate NAS and allow for expandability down the road. It would have to be a rackmount setup.

This file server would hold archived video files and optionally serve our users for general file needs. 10Gbe capability like expansion slot available and all that. Linux isn't a strong suit of mine and I believe out there is webgui ones to administer a file server as integrate Active Directory for permissions if need be.

Any good guides on this I could follow? Thanks!

I would NOT, repeat NOT advise custom building a server for your job. There's too much risk involved and lots of potential downtime when something breaks. I see those Seagate Blackarmor 440's going for $700-$1800 depending on capacity. Which model were you looking? Or better yet, what is your budget range?

A secondary concern is that most rackmount cases that you can buy off the shelf are pretty crap compared to what you get from a major OEM.

As for software, you can run something like FreeNAS which comes with an easy web UI for nearly every task. It's FreeBSD and not Linux, but that doesn't really matter in your case.
