Now I'm not sure if this is a good idea in this particular forums because of the volumn of users that frequent Anandtech, but I for one would love to see it implemented, at least on an experimental basis at first, but definately system wide later on. What I'm talking about is custom user avatars. The little icons that appear above your name on the left side of each post. Like for example mine is the tech guru avatar that's standard with this version of Fusetalk. (the forums software) I've seen custom avatars used very successfully on a wide variety of forums with no problems. At least 99% of users are responcible enough to choose good ones that go with their charecter, personality, and/or user nick. So I can't see this really being a big problem if it was implemented. Of course that would be up to the site admin, of who's decision I would fully respect be it yes or not on this, but if they did go with it, I think it would be great.

Do you think this would be a good idea for Anandtech or would it be more trouble than it's worth? I for one would love to see it.

Well I do agree that they might be abused, but at the same time the forums software can limit what the user has for an icon in format and size. Like if you limited all of the images to 120x120 they'd be just the right size and then if you further limited them to jpg only, you eliminate the problem of animated images. Here are some good examples of user avatars I've seen that I think would be good examples of the tasteful avatars most users would use.

Your feedback on this is definately welcome. I'm just looking to see what everyone's opinion is on this.

I think this would be cool if implemented properly. IE size restriction, no animation, no porn, etc. Childish people would just make it easier for the rest of us to ignore them by having a goofy avatar.

How many mods would be needed to go though 100,000 members avatars?

Yeah... I don't think anyone waiting for custom avatars should hold their breath.... ;)

I voted "Not at all. It would cause too many problems." because I've seen it get out of hand at other forums + for non-subscriber's it would slow their browsing experience down.

It'll never happen. They want to keep it as professional as possible here. Custom avatars make a site look like Pokemon.

Maturity level around here just wouldn't allow it.

I've been on forums that do allow it, and I've seen avatars that, while not necessarily improper, definately bothered me.

Custom avatars would pose too much of a problem. Not only would they have to be policed by the mods, but they would kill bandwidth. To those of you that say off site linking could be done: this would cause the forums to load even slower since all avatars would have to be loaded. If you have a problem with not liking the available avatars, turn off the option.

I don't like custom avatars. It turns into a mish-mash of styles. At least the stock avatars hear all fit into one big theme.
