CUSL2, CD-RW, Win2k and DMA (Oh, my!)

Hi,

I have the above combination. When I was running win98, my sony cd-rw on my Abit BH6 motherboard I could select DMA for my CD-RW device.

Seemed to work. Never had a glitch.

Now I've switched motherboards to the ASUS CUSL2 and operating systems to Windows 2k.

I cannot seem to select a DMA mode for use with the CD-RW on the CUSL2. Nor can I select any kind of DMA mode within Windows 2k. (Though I CAN for my IBM hard drive.)

I've also made a ton of coasters with this setup. Maybe this has something to do with not being able to use DMA and maybe it doesn't.

Is there any way to use DMA with my CD-RW, my CUSL2 mobo and Win 2k?

Thanks!

Maki

Try searching for posts with DMA in the title in this forum. You will find some enlightening things.

If you know how to enable DMA in win2k, but it keeps going to PIO mode anyhow, you need to actaully tell your motherboard to detect the drive. If when BIOS goes through its thing, you do NOT see that CD-R listed, its prolly not going to give you DMA in win2k.

EX.

When my bios loads I see:

Primary Master: WD 20.5------
Secondary Master: Plextor-----------
Secondary Slave: Toshiba--------------

If you aren't seeing all your IDE drives when you boot, win2k can't seem to enable DMA. If you don't know how to actaully enable DMA in win2k, do the search above.

Cool. I wonder if hooking it to my promise ATA-66 controller would win me anything. Time to check Promise's web site for a win2k driver.
