What other memory do you have in the board?

You can only run 2 double sided dimms in that board, in any flavor, and a third will not work.

Also, believe that the official ram supported by the board is 512mb.

The new BIOSes may assist with your RAM. Currently what version BIOS are you using?

Before you upgrade your BIOS, you may try to set SDRAM Data Driving Mode in the BIOS to Strong. This usually assists with large RAM sizes or troubles operating at PC133.

If you do not know how to upgrade your BIOS, you should install ASUS's Windows BIOS flash utility. You can flash the BIOS using this program. Make sure that you unzip the flash upgrade file before you proceed with the flash...;)

well... thanks for the help on the flash upgrade.

I was running the 1003 BIOS that came with the board. Both the board and windows read the stick at 128mb. Sandra still shows it as "Bank 1 - DIMM 1 : DIMM SDRAM 128MB/72" ... but... "Memory Module 1 : 256MB 16x[32Mx4] SDRAM PC133U-333-542 (CL3 upto 133Mhz)."

What am I missing?

thatnks for the replies so far... oh and I set it to strong when I first installed it... even though I did it blindly :)

The cusl motherboards are very picky about the type of ram you put in.

I have one and I bought a generic stick and it will not run at 133mhz but went out and bought a kingston, crucial and micron and they all will run at 133mhz

try a different ram manufacturer and see if it makes a difference

256MB 16x[32Mx4] SDRAM is your problem. None of the Intel chipsets like the organisation of this type of density of RAM. You need 16x[16Mx8] SDRAM.

Can't really think of anything else.....unless you have a VIA chipset based motherboard in a secondary computer or something....you can try the RAM in there.
