Hola,

I'm looking for some help on this. I've searched and found nothing so far on it. This problem has been around for awhile. I built my computer Christmas before last and it has worked great till recently. I love to build computers and have tinkered with electronics since 1973, when I got a Certificate for Radio TV Servicing.

My computer consists of a CUSL2 MB, P3 800EB, 133 FSB, 512meg of PC133 Micron, VisionTek GeForce3 Ti 200, Sound Blaster SB16 PCI sound card and a Linksys NIC card. I was using a SB Live! card, but it seemed to have some problems with drivers and a game I like to play, so I got the SB16.

When I first noticed the problem, I found that a stick of memory had gone bad. I replaced that and ended up reinstalling Win98 several times. I kept having trouble and found that my CD-Rom was acting up and giving me bad installs. Replaced that. After updating to new drivers, DirectX 8.1a, everything worked fine. Now I am crashing with my game program to desktop. Which is what started all this.

The only thing I can find now that is cropping up is this message at boot up.

<Bios:> bios update data incorrect; CPUID 00000686, PCI Device Listing

From the manual, it tells me that this is a bios update loader for the cpu. What do I need to do to correct this or is this a flaw in the board? Asus has nothing on this and I've sent off an email to them requesting help on it. Anyone have any ideas on this? I would appreciate any help I can get because I'm at a loss right now. I'm going to dig out some books and see what I can find out about it. I'm assuming this is loading bios info into the cpu to speed up operations. Thanks for any help.

Your motherboard BIOS is unable to recognise your processor stepping because the BIOS lacks the latest microcode update.

To resolve the problem, please download and flash the latest BIOS for your motherboard, Version 1009 Final.

Thanks, I'll do it. This crashing problem seems to affect everything, IE 5.5, Windows, Games, drivers, etc. My computer has become very unreliable except for cruising the internet. If IE crashes, I just go back to where I was and pick up reading. Thanks again.

Well, I tried that using the utility that Asus supplies. Problem is, it runs through the first steps but fails to verify on the last step and won't finish flashing the bio's. I'm going to check my setup to make sure its not blocked from being flashed or something. So I'm still with the ver. 1001a instead of the version 1009 now. I'll check back later. Thanks.

Use AFLASH.EXE supplied from ASUS here, and flash from DOS.

Because you will be going from the very earliest BIOS, flashing to any later version may need you to pull the BIOS battery/reset the BIOS by shorting the CLRTC jumper pads, after flashing because of some significant changes to the BIOS.
