Just bought a Samsung 17" monitor for my son. He noticed numerious bands from the left and right side and top and bottom of the monitor curving inwards towards the centre of the screen. It's barely noticably in windows (yet still there) but very noticable when he is playing games such as Halo or Call to Duty. Monitor defect or something else?

try fiddling with the monitors' settings, esp "moire"

may be defect, may just be interference or the monitor wasnt setup properly at the factory

I am almost 100% sure you can fix that problem if you mess around a bit with the display settings on the monitor.

try to download new Samsung Monitor drivers from their site...and make sure they are the most recent ones. Also, it might be a problem with his graphics card....?

megnetic interference? old speakers? a lava lamp or blacklight next to it? I've found that the most common cause for stuff like that, in my case, were lights, and electronics too close to the monitor(besides magneticly shielded stuff)

Played with the settings and still the same thing. Downloaded the latest driver from Samsung and still the same. Today got ahold of another Samsung monitor and plugged it into the same computer. No faint bands under any application so I know its not the computer or video card. Quess it is defective of wasn't set up correctly at the factory. Time for a trip back to the computer store for an exchange.

It was the moire setting and after a bit more fine tuning it solved the problem. Although on the left an right side the screen looks grainy while the center is crystal clear. Can't seem to find an adjustment for that. It looks almost like little compressed diamond shapes that extend out about an inch from the left and right side of the screen. What ever it is it's hard on the eyes and certainly does not look normal.
