Curved Samsung Phone in October

Not only is that a gimmick, it's a crappy gimmick.

Curved might be appealing for large television screens where it might make the experience seem more immersive, or for the body/back of the phone, but for the display of a small device it makes little sense.

A bendable, scroll-like display that pops out makes a lot of sense, but not a phone with simply a curved screen. I don't think they are coming out with the scrolls just yet, but when the technology is mature, mark me down for a scroll computer. Would love one over a tablet. The one in the Samsung video - which is just a animation of what it would look like - is something I've wanted for the longest time. They aren't the first to envision such a product, but the technology to make such a product has only arrived recently.

All these companies have been teasing these types of products since the advent of OLED years ago. I want one already! Then we can move on to codices...

In a video, they teased a smartphone with a bendable screen that opens up into a smallish tablet. Berkeley also demonstrated how a phone display screen that's curved along its edges would open up exponentially more space for viewing content.

A bendable, plastic display screen could also be virtually unbreakable, although it's unclear whether the new phone -- which could be a version of the new Galaxy Note 3 -- would be plastic or some sort of step along the way.

Not so if 'curved' means flexible. Less broken screens is a pretty big win if nothing else.

I think that was just curved glass with a flat display if I'm not mistaken.

If it's OLED with a plastic protective layer, then yes, I'd be happy to see smartphones that move away from glass. Glass is smooth and pretty, but even the more resilient kinds of glass will break on drops. But that article doesn't specify what it will be.
