Cursor freezes in XP

I've been having frequent (few times per day) cursor freezes after switching to XP. The cursor locks in place, and I can't navigate. I can control everything with my keyboard still, and usually restart with that. I have a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer (optical). I switched to my normal Explorer mouse (PS/2 port), and that seems to have solved the problem so far. But it feels so cheap. I miss my old mouse.

Has anyone heard of a problem with opitcal mice with XP? Could it be the USB? Could it be that I only have 128MB RDRAM? I plan to upgrade soon, but I didn't think it would cause freezes. I thought XP was supposed to be stable.

Frequently, that kind of freeze up is video driver related. Why not try your optical mouse in the PS/2 port? That's where I run mine . . . IRQ 12 is not used by anything else. Why waste it? USB is often (most always) on a shared IRQ and that is not always good for rodentia.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It often happens after playing a game, and my screen switches from "game" mode. I need to get a USB to PS/2 adapter.

I switched back to the Intellimouse, and noticed that the drivers are not "digitally signed" and I got a bunch of warning messages when I tried installing them. So I cancelled out, and left it with the default "USB compatible mouse" drivers. Maybe that will help.
