currently reliable hd brand

my 75gxp is dying me thinks so i'm gonna go buy an hd in an hour or so

choice between maxtor, wd, or seagate

i'm looking for something that's reliable. i have the impression that maxtor and wd used to make unreliable hard drives but things change right so im lookign for some opinions on the current generation of hds of 60gb. something reliable and not too loud.

thanks in advance

Maxtor = never had a problem, owned like 20 hds by them so far.. Wester Digital = Great drives but I've had 2 flakey drives in three years.. Luckily, their warranty department is great and both flakey drives were flakey out of the box (not something that creeped up on you after years).. IBM - Crapolla.. Had 3 of their drives fail on me.. In a row.. Samsung= very, very, very good.. My experience with them is limited but their drives are cheap, fast, and almost silent..

Current system: 2x40gb 7200rpm WD's raided (one had the "drive clicking" problem - RMA'd) and 1x80gb samsung.. The rest of my computers all have Maxtors- can't resist the great rebate deals!

Measured in percentile (how reliable it is compared to all others)

Seagate Barracuda ATA IV: 88
Seagate Barracuda ATA V: 93
Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB: 90
Western Digital Caviar WD1200BB: 37
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9: 6
Maxtor DiamondMax D740X: 63
Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 180GXP : 23
Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 120GXP: 88

For reference:
Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 75GXP: 19

thanks!

hmm where did you find that i couldn't find it on storagereview.com

and what's with the 6 for diamondmax plus 9.... can't be that bad with all these satisfied maxtor users?!

thanks for the input people

I'm using an IBM 60GXP and a Maxtor 7200 120 gigger and like them both

Anything but Western Digiatal imho. I used to build computers at a previous job and 80% of the defective drives were Western Digital.

While I DO like WD drives I have to wonder why many people think that they are "high end" or "luxury" hard drives... I hear newsgroup chatter that makes western digital out to be the rolls royce of hard drives! Where the hell did this myth originate from? Is it because they had drives called "Caviar" ??? Maxtor is good, reliable and cheap..I'd say that's your best bet.. If you do buy a WD either get it locally or from a reputable online dealer.. You may have to RMA the drives because they have an odd initial fan rate (in other words, they either don't work out of the box or they'll last you forever )...

There's a link near the top of the front page.

As far as "WD being the high end or luxury hard drives". Everyone knows that currently those honors are held the MAS. 🙂

If you don't care about noise, then Western Digital is the best choice for performance and reliability. They would be perfect if they were only quieter.

unfortuantely im kinda sensitive to noise

i think i'm gonna go with the maxtor dm+9 60gb. i would go with a barracuda but the closest local store only has the 7200.7 and i'm not buying just released hds again

thanks for all the input

I've never had a HD die on me...

WD
Maxtor
IBM
Seagate.

Had em all....

I had one Maxtor go wacko... didn't completely die.

I now have 3 Quantums, 5 WDs, 2 IBM, 1 Samsung, 1 Seagate 😀

see this is the kind of thing you see when you ask about hard drive. very mixed results. 😀 i guess like ppl say it means the hds are about the same except when a major lemon comes out like the 75gxp

I've had 3 Maxtors die and one is dying. I've had two WDs. The first was literally a tank. The second is still going strong. I also have a Seagate SCSI, but I haven't had it long.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either Maxtor, WD, or Seagate, just get the one that fits your needs (price, warranty, noise, etc.) In terms of reliability, I would imagine that they are all pretty even. I've had a WD 100 gig die on me after a year, but that wouldnt deter me from buying another WD. I've had some Maxtor, Seagate, and WD drives that have lasted many years, I've just learned to back things up more regularly, you can never really predict how long a drive is going to last.

Heck, I would even buy an IBM drive, I have heard great things about their 120gxp series of drives, the only thing that would stop me from buying one is that I might have trouble reselling it later since many people are still bitter from past experiences with IBM drives.

My vote is definately Seagate.

I've used Maxtor and WD, but Seagate has given me the least amount of problems.

Maxtor I would personally stay away from as I've had nothing but problems with them. I have had to return 4-5 drives over the past few years. And don't tell me it's something I've done wrong, because I've got 3 other computer geeks that have had the same problems. You get what you pay for.

WD is good, but I still prefer Seagate. Their drives are nearly silent.
