I have heard that Linux Mint is a very well polished distribution. It installs multimedia codecs by default so its one less thing to worry about. You can boot it from a flash drive, but it takes a few steps to set that up. Here's a guide for it:

Linux Mint is based upon the base code from Ubuntu so it should have the same superb hardware detection, but it apparently varies in software (like the update tool and apparently it adds the slab menu for Gnome to make it look a lot nicer). It'll definitely be a lot smoother than Vista imho, but just make sure all your hardware works before you install it (your sound card, wireless/ethernet card, video card, etc).

yea all of my hardware is up to date so i shouldnt have any problem getting drivers for any of it. and the one i downloaded was the KDE community version. Ive used opensuse and redhat for about a day then switched over to ubuntu for a couple weeks then i started using kubuntu for a couple days. TBH i didnt really notcie a difference between ubuntu and kubuntu in regards to navigating around. Ive heard linux mint is good also so im looking forward to installing it.

Would i be able to resize my main partition? I have vista installed on the entire hard drive but once i get used to mint i want to install it on my hd.

Well its basically Gnome, but with Slab. In fact if you installed OpenSUSE with gnome then you should've used Slab's menu already. So if you're running Ubuntu already its not that much of a difference.

Yeah it should have a similar partitioning tool. If not you could always just install GParted and resize it through a GUI. I personally just use the ntfsresize command. Just make sure to defragment from within Windows Vista beforehand.

Are you going to install it, or play with it off a Live DVD?

If a live disk, then the driver thing is not so easy to solve, I still haven't.
