Current P4s and Hyperthreading.

Do the current line of northwoods support hyperthreading, once its introduced? I was reading that my motherboard (P4B533) will support it with a bios flash. I have a 1.6a. With the flash, will my cpu support it as well, or are they only rolling it out with the 3ghz+ p4s?

Thanks for any help.

It is true that current p4's have them built into the chip but the concensus is that they are disabled and no real way to enable them....So don't count on every using it with your 1.6...I am not!!!!

I wonder if, when Intel releases the HT-enabled 3.06GHz P4, if they will start enabling it on the lower clocked chips that they manufacture after the P4 3.06 release, since they should then have the same HT "version" as the P4 3.06...

All P4's have HT built onto their dies, but it is permanently disabled. There is no way to ever turn it on. The 3.06GHz P4 will be the first to offer HT.

Actually, from what people gathered at IDF, HT on the 3.06's will apparantly be a revised version of the implementation on the Xeons and current P4's. So even if you did enable HT on your current P4's, it won't be the same.

That's correct imgod2u, the HT stepping found in the upcoming 3.06GHz P4 this quarter is a completely new version of HT. What most don't realize is that the new HT is greatly improved from the current HT stepping found in the .13-micron Xeons currently on the market.

But will they start enabling HT on slower CPUs manufactured after the 3.06GHz is released, since, theoretically they would then have the same HT that the 3.06 has?
