Current NBA Player Comes Out

Why is this such a big deal for gay men? Coming out? Is homosexuality anything more than fucking men not unlike heterosexuality is no more than fucking women? I don't go around advertising that I am a heterosexual male. WHy should they get that privilege?

Nobody will sign him now. He is damaged goods. I think he is retiring and just wanted to make a statement before doing so.

Yeah, there's a lot to envy about the lives of homosexuals in our society.

Holy shit you have to kidding.

Because every time you mention your wife, that you enter a public space with her, that you smile at her over dinner at a restaurant, you are doing what he has been unable to do until now. If he had done any of those things (it sounds like he's never even had a boyfriend), he would be hounded and stalked by press desperate for a story as Kerry Rhodes was, unable to control the story.

Good for Jason Collins. I hope someday being a gay athlete isn't a major story (or one at all), but until then I admire him for his courage.

Who says he couldn't do those things? He simply chose not to.

Was very surprised in 2013 that he was the first to come out. Good for him.

I thought AC Green coming out as a virgin was more ballsy though.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I don't see why this comes as a surprise. There have been gay people since forever.

When did you need special treatment and commendation for having a sexuality? Hey, "I'm coming out as straight!!!!"

Oh sure, nobody's ever been persecuted for being gay in the recent past and going back decades to hundreds of years.
http://www.metroweekly.com/poliglot/2012/12/hate-crimes-against-gays-and-lesbians-increase-in.html
"Of the 6,216 reported hate crimes with one motivator, 20.8 percent resulted because of a person’s perceived sexual orientation. Although reported "single-bias" hate crimes were down from 6,624 in 2010, incidents resulting from sexual orientation bias were up from 19.3 percent in 2010."
That makes them more common than hate crimes based on religion.

Jesus, the willful ignorance of people acting like it's a "special privilege" to admit to your sexuality instead of hiding it away in a society that still has a HUGE population who are strongly, strongly anti-gay.

How's that view from the cheap seats?

Great that it wasn't the NFL.

Over the last weeks you could see there was a big push taking place to get homosexual athletes out when the Jackie Robinson film was due for release (you can smell the orchestration). They really really wanted the NFL bad but couldn't swing it. Oh they'll scrape some NFL player up but no firsties. Sorry for NBA but that league is shot anyway.

Obviously to some of your persuasion, it is a BFD.

When was the last time you heard of someone getting harassed because they are straight?

When was the last time you heard of someone getting fired from their job for being straight?

When was the last time you heard of a parent disowning their child for being straight?

When was the last time you heard of someone being killed because they are straight?

I'll go ahead and answer the question for you - never. However, for someone who is gay, these kinds of concerns are very real.

You say you don't advertise your sexuality? Bullshit. As others have already pointed out, every time you talk about your wife or girlfriend, you advertise it. When you show any kind of PDA (holding hands, a kiss goodbye, etc), you advertise it. Every time a breeder gets married, they advertise it.

God help us if a queer does those very same things - suddenly a large part of society starts crying "I don't mind if you're gay, but you don't have to push it down my throat.", coupled with a plethora of jeers, snide remarks, and dirty looks (unless your one of the unlucky few who gets something worse). It's a wonder why anyone even bothers coming out anyway. Someone has to take the first step - someone has to embolden the closeted masses to stop hiding their identities, to stop living lies and start living life.

You say it doesn't matter to you, that you could care less about someone's orientation? That's a fucking lie - if it was true, you would never have replied to this thread to begin with.

While it was a difficult thing to do personally and professionally, this isn't groundbreaking. You (generic) would be naive to not think there arent gay pro ball players.

That's basically all I'm saying.

Nobody is saying there aren't gay ball players - I don't think anyone is even implying it.

However, you (YOU) would be naive to not think that many of these gay ball players are hiding in the closet, fearful about how being outed will hurt their professional careers. A decade ago, or any other time before that, this kind of news would have ruined people in the NBA.

There are surely gays in every pro sport but how many of them are out?

Eventually I hope that the publicly known sexual orientation of pro sports players is a non-issue. I do take offense as to how some people trivialize something that isn't trivial on a historical or personal level while wielding no life experience that makes their opinion valuable.

The ignorance and stupidity is strong in you.

Why is this such a big deal and why do people find the need to share their sexuality? Should straight people come out as straight?

A complete idiot. Using this to get attention.
