Current gen games worth anything in the future?

Was just browsing ebay for games, and saw how old Final Fantasy games are going for way over $100, and there was that weird one a while back that a mother sold for thousands I think?

Is there any current gen games you think will be worth something in the future, or are they just too abundant to have a chance?

For some strange reason, I think Ace Combat 6 is going to be worth at least what it was brand new. Don't know why I think that game will, just a terrible hunch.

Which one do you think has at least a longshot chance?

I honestly don't think any game today, short of "They only made 100" flukes will become valuable today. In other words, Halo will always sell for about the same price as it is now. And if software manufacturers get their way, games will become worthless and unsellable in the future (DRM).

I would say a few games might be worth something. A good example would be the World of Warcraft collector's editions go for a lot. I have a feeling SC2 will be the same due to the WoW Pet. Other than that, unless a new game becomes a classic, I doubt any will be worth much.

Heck no. those are the games that are going to be worth the least. You can't play the games in the future because of the DRM status, and millions of copies have already been sold. For a game to be worth a lot in the future, it has to be relatively rare. Very common, very popular games are going to be very worthless in the future.

Gaming gets more popular every generation, so they're making more and more copies of games with each generation. My guess is very few of them will be rare enough to be worth a shit. I'm not sure if there's a way to tell, but a limited number of the original Little Big Planet games with that removed Muslim song (or w/e it was) might be worth something some day as they're rare.

lol @ blaming DRM for depreciating the value of collector's item games in the future.

DRM also gave my grandma cancer and causes global warming.

No, there is only a limited run of the Collector's Edition Blizzard games. And since each one is a use once and it is tied to your account, they are very limited. I would wager the vanilla WoW CE is worth quite a bit of money to people who play WoW. The Wrath of the Lich King CE sold out in preorders in about a day. You'd be very hard pressed to find a SC2 CE as well I'm sure. They were up on eBay (unopened ofc) for around $150 on launch day. Imagine in a year's time. The in game pet you get is unique to that CE and is only available for whoever got in on the preorders. The fact that WoW is so popular is what makes these worth even more. They are limited runs so a lot of people who play miss out.

Games that have a very short print period may appreciate. For example Mario Power Tennis for the Gamecube I purchased new for $20 or so and two years later sold for $50 because they stopped making it shortly after I bought it.

Tales of Vesperia's price fluctuates greatly, a few months ago there was an oddity where you could buy it new for $15 and a month later it was selling used for $50+, it had a very short print period. That's the only example that comes to mind though.

I think there will be, but I think there will be a lot less thanks to the fact that there are less small niche games released today. The games that usually end up being worth a lot are smaller japanese games that end up being really good (I've sold a lot of tales games for >100$, ogre battle for psx for 80$, dragon force for 120$), I still have Valkyrie profile which is still worth over 100$ even tho it was remade. Maybe games like white knight chronicles, demon souls might be worth a lot in the future but it will takes years to tell. The psx was kind of like a golden age for rare japanese RPG's I guess, I picked up a lot of games for 15$ from gamestop that I later sold for around 100$ or more. Basically you're looking for cult classics, none of the shooters out nowadays will ever be worth crap (I love FPS's but it's true).

You're right, it does seem like 85% of the time it's the lesser known Japanese RPG's that end up being the expensive games.

I sold my Greatest Hits edition of FFVII maybe two years ago for $100. Looking on Ebay now though it seems like you can get it for less than $30. Ahh game prices, you fickle thing you.

20 years from now there will be some James Rolfe-esque collector who has to have every Xbox 360 game ever made. No doubt about it. However, most retro games aren't worth that much. Usually $10 tops in used stores.

What you'll see retaining their value are games that were critically praised but didn't sell well. I also think we'll see some resurgence in interest for disc based games. 20 years from now it will all be download only or cloud based. I think you'll see people looking for discs for the same reason people like vinyl albums today.

Speculate which ones. :)

Tales of Vesperia is an interesting guess, those quirky Japanese games usually end up being the ones that are.

But only RARE ones are worth anything. The common, dime-a-dozen ones are worth even less now.

My point exactly. Your fooling yourself if you think "Collectors edition" is going to somehow magically make your game worth more in 10 years.

Actually just look for the Vanilla WoW collectors edition unopened on ebay. The prices are insane.

Of the 3 on there, $830 is the lowest.

IIRC that is the only way to get the Diablo pet(not saying that is a good reason for it to be worth so much, but some WoW pet collectors are..... odd ;) ).

Only time will tell. If anything only for collectors, especially since everything is turning towards digital distribution.

Not only that, but most games will probably continue to be re-released on future platforms, a la XBL(A), PSN, and Virtual Console (and even Steam / GOG, etc.).
