********************

At the time of the Pentiums release the market stagnated, simular to today. The thought was that processors were as strong as they needed to be. Prices only dropped ~20% from their release date.

Scary how simular the prices were to the the FX-55 :).

Point is, we've been through these lulls in CPU development before. And while I don't really count the X2 as a developement in a pure power sense, I feel the CPU industry will pick up relatively soon.

So everyone who thinks Moores law will be broken... :)

But it's a different situation.
In many ways, those a premium CPU's in terms of features (multiplier unlocked) and not just speed.
If you look at the Intel EE line, it's similarly priced ($1000), but their other processors, which in terms of performance aren't far off, go to much cheaper levels (for say 3.6GHz procs).

10 years ago there wasn't the option of/market for EE/FX type processors.

Unless you're a gamer or editing video, your CPU will spend 95% of the time running under 40% load. Folks are using Super Pi to see who can break that 20 sec barrier mark for 32M digits.
