Are trades and relate jobs are at risk because the housing & new building permit is taking a dive?

I've been seeing numbers on the net that claims new building permits drop between 40-60%, and that mean job lost should be in line with housing decline.

How much of an affect on the economy if 50% of trades people are unemployed?

There will be (and certainly already has been) a change in the number of jobs available. Right now the effects are not as significant as many workers are still on the payroll without much work available (and businesses still in business that won't be for long). Actual construction jobs will take the biggest hit. Companies that do repair/maintinence will not be as affected unless construction companies shift into that area and oversaturate the market.

As for effect, it will not be 50%. Many will go on to get jobs in other areas and the number of jobs lost will be spread over a few years. The actual impact is impossible to estimate, but coming along with so many other negatives in the econonomy, that alone will affect little.

There's a lot of Construction work here in the Vancouver area of BC Canada. Probably won't help you out any, unless you have US/Canadian citizenship or can get a Work Visa(there's been talk of giving these out, but don't know if they have or not yet). There's a severe shortage of workers here with huge waiting lists to get a Contractor. Some $100billion worth of Construction projects going on in the Vancouver area and the shortage is expected to last for at least 4 years(2010 Olympics construction has pushed the Industry to the limit and beyond).

I assumed you are in the Trades, but not so sure after re-reading your post.

The current situation in the US will certainnly affect the Trades. How much is anybodies guess at this point, things could possibly turn around quickly. However, I think the amount of debt people have taken on in recent years will probably mean a cooling in the Construction industry for some time as they pay those debts down.

What I want to do is gaging the economy of the US because it will affect our export (specially lumber) and tourism. And, economy may affect our current housing market here in Victoria.

<-- want to buy a house but don't know when is a good time to make the jump.
