Ok, a friends card is dead. Not fully up to date on all thats happened with cards in the last year, but from quick research it looks like these are prolly the best options to give him depending on what he wants to spend. Agree or disagree with this list?:

@100: FX5600XT

@150: 9600XT

@200: 9700Pro

TIA,

Better this way

I wasn't sure there myself either. Didn't see specific tests of the XT model 5600. Is the 4200 a better performer all around, or does it depend on what game engine it's on? Are newer games more likely to be playable on one or the other?

Will either of them be able to play the DX9 games in playable fashion? (say 25-30fps @ 800x600?)

BTW, his system is a XP1600+ w/ 512 PC2100 on an NF2 board. He'll prolly get a Barton 2500+ or so and some PC3200 within 6 mo.

I would agree with McArra's revised list. The ti4200 is faster than a 5600 in most tests, and a 5600xt is a slower version of the 5600. The only advantage of a 5600 is it has better aa/af support.

9700pro to play everything at max and future games.... 9600 to play everything CURRENT at max.
i beg to differ. A 9700pro chokes on a dose of Halo, a 9600 is half a 97/9800. Spend alittle more and get awhole lot more.
