I am looking for an iPad equivalent tablet PC ... probably using the Android OS for my wife. I see MANY different models out there with many different versions of Android installed. What do I want this computer to do? Generally what the iPad does.

Why not go with an iPad? Because we are not Apple fans and the iPad is ridiculously overpriced. An Android (open source) OS solution that is upgradable is the preferred solution. I tried Apple before and felt like I was being squeezed by a huge boa with their HW/SW restrictions ... this is why all my PCs are just that ... PCs.

Thank you for your recommendations including what versions of Android to go for and which to stay away from.

You want an extremely restrictive and useless device like the iPad. But you don't want an iPad.

You just want an extremely restrictive and useless device from another Maker.

Right.

Or you can pay $500- $800 and get a 13" thin and light Notebook that can do it all.

Or you can get an iPad and be constricted by a Boa. Because as far as I know, the other makers make even shittier and more restrictive devices than the iPad.

My boyfriend just got an Archos 5 internet tablet and it is very nice... has Android. I'm not sure if it does exactly what iPad does, but I'm just throwing it out there as an option. :)

No.

I want my wife to be be happy. She would like to surf the Net, basic services, etc. \

I HATE Apple and will not buy from Steve Jobs EVER again.

Is that enough rebellion for you? I am looking recommendations for a non-Apple device ...

But does your wife love fruity products?

To answer your question, then no one makes a comparable iPad equivalent. They are all inferior to the already overly simplistic device.

The iPad is currently the only model I know of that is fast, has a good finger-friendly touch screen, long battery life and a well-stocked app store.

The Android tablets are generally much slower, need a stylus much of the time, have half the battery life or less, worse displays, and don't have access to the official Android Market. I've looked for a good one, since I'd rather have an open development model for a toy like this.

The iPad appears to be one of the few Apple products where there really isn't a huge markup compared to the competition. The cheap Android tablets are that way because of using much cheaper parts.
