Current Best For Laptops..7970M?

So I'm looking to buy an Origin Eon 17S laptop with the 7970M Graphics card.
From some research, i've come up with the 7970M card being the best on right now on the market.

Can anyone make any suggestions.. to a custom built gaming laptop as a rival to the Origin Eon 17S & the graphics card?

Especially if a new one from nVIDIA would be releasing anytime soon.. like the mobile version of the GTX 690 or something new from AMD. An 8 series GFX card, maybe.

(Mods, I'm not entirely sure this is in the right sub-forum; but here goes.)

I. Processor/CPU:
-> Intel Core i7-3720M Quad-Core Processor (2.60GHz), 6MB Cache

II. Current Graphics Card:
-> Single 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7970M (2GB of Total GFX)

III. Display Resolution:
-> 1920 x 1080 17.3" LED Backlit Glossy LCD Screen

IV. Power Supply Unit Specification (Brand, Wattage, Ampage, Age). If possible, please provide a link to a website containing the power supply specifications:
-> Default Power Adapter by Origin.

V. Case Specifications(N/A, Model, Length, Low Profile, Cooling, HTPC, Water, Silent):
-> Default

Purchase Details:

I. Budget? Please be sure to include currency (If not USD), retailer preferences & specify whether rebates are a viable option.
~ 2500 - 2700 USD

II. Any particular preferences (Manufacturer[nV or AMD], Brand[XFX, Sapphire, EVGA, etc], Cooling Solutions)?
-> Don't know of any.

III. Do you plan to have any Multi-GPU solutions such as Crossfire or SLI?
-> No.

IV. Have you previously looked at a product(s) which you feel would fit your needs?
-> Not really.

V. What are your needs for this GPU? Which games(If any)do you intend to play? If you have this information at hand, what are the desired detail levels?
-> Skyrim, BF3, Arkham City & upcoming titles
-> All at the maximum possible.

VI. Do you plan on overclocking the card you intend to purchase?
-> If I can, yes.
 
The 7970m is indeed the fastest mobile GPU around. It's about as fast as a Desktop GTX570, I'm not sure nvidia will be able to best it. Even if they do. Nvidia's mobile GPU prices are ridiculous. The GTX675m despite being 40% slower is still $150 more.

You can get the 7970m in crossfire as well. So it all depends on how efficient nv can make a mobile kepler. The 7970m is based on the desktop 7800 cards which are more effieincent than anything out there.

The 7970m has 1280SPs with a 256bit memory bus with 153GB/s of bandwidth, so it's a little faster than a 7850 which is a little slower than a 570. It would probably be with in 5%. Which is amazing considering it uses less than 100W.

Huh?

The 7970M is by far the single fastest mobile GPU to date. The fact that its as fast as a desktop GPU is huge.

Now back on topic, I am sure nVidia will come out with something that matches the 7970. But it will ultimately come down to which of them (AMD/nVidia) can give enough chips to the OEM's.

I am not sure when there will be a mobile 690 anytime soon though.
 
Kepler is more energy efficient which is especially important for mobile.. if you can wait, I would suggest waiting for a mobile Kepler GPU.
 
power draw isn't any more important for a highend mobile gpu. you can't really use them on battery anyway. I use integrated when mobile. it definitely wont be worth spendinrg twice as much for similar performance,which tends to be the case with nvidia mobile parts.
 
Recently ordered an M17x R4 recently with the following upgrades:

3720QM
7970M
1080p screen

$1964 after tax. Never pay the website price (would have been $2164)

The 7970M will overclock to almost 1Ghz. It's literally a desktop 7870 in a laptop. And it runs cool too.

78xx is still more efficient than kepler so far, per TPU's perf/w charts.

still i wonder what ever happened to upgradable graphics on laptops. i liked the idea of a portable GPU box that you plug into a laptop but it never got off the ground.. there should be a PCIe expansion plug in notebooks imo.

Plenty of gaming laptops are upgradable as long as the new GPU is the same form factor. People have put the 7970M in the M17x R2 and R3 and even the M15x. I imagine it would also fit in the Sager NP8150 and NP8170.

I have an M17x R1. The cooling on it is phenomenal. My 4870's are overvolted and overclocked by 100/250 and never break 75C. I can overclock the CPU by 800 Mhz and not even break 70c under regular use. The Asus models of the same generation ran much hotter than that at stock speeds. People shit on alienware, but their laptops are top-notch in my experience.

for anyone who's willing to answer this for him, what's the best place to buy a laptop
 
Your only option is the Alienware with physical graphics switching MUX. Otherwise you are gambling $2500 that AMD will be able satisfactorily fix the enduro issue that makes their "fastest mobile GPU" sit at 60% utilization
