Curiousity: Small engines in each class?

Mazda 1.8L=130HP. Not to mention that the MX3 and early MX5 engines were pulled from the 323GT, that was turbocharged. I remember a Miata owner on these forums telling me that the 1.8L I4s could take 10+ of boost no problem.

I thought the I4 MX3s were only 1.6L.

I'm pretty sure volkwagen rabbits had 1.6ltr engines.
Geo Metro's have a 1.0ltr 3-cly engine
chrysler had a 2.5ltr v-6 they also use a 2.7ltr currently

yup.. we had a 800cc 3 cylinder maruti van (same one used in the 800)..

37HP in a 1400lb vehcle... with a nice tight turning circle... mmm .. i loved that van.

Some old jeeps have 5.4L V6s. They would have been better off with an engine that didn't suck, however large.

I believe his 1.8L I4 quote was for the Miata.

Mazda had a 1.6L I4 and a 1.8L V6 for the MX3. The 1.6L made 88hp in its first few years, then 105hp. The 1.8L V6 made 130hp.

The Miata was given a 1.6L I4 in its earliest years, and later was bumped to an 1.8L I4. The 1.6L made 110hp, and the 1.8L ranged from 128 in its introduction, to 133 a few years later, 140, then finally 142. The Turbocharged Mazdaspeed Miata has 172hp.

The Miata engine was ripped from a 323GTX, which was turbocharged from the Factory. There were a few minor changes for the Miata, but overall its the same engine, and takes the boost it was built for very well. The Miata takes about 6-8PSI no problem and a typical supercharger will put down between 160-190 to the rear wheels, depending on the kit/boost. Anything higher than 8PSI, you have to do some minor engine work, but the block is still strong. FlyinMiata has a 12PSI kit thats supposed to push around 225hp to the wheels, but you still need to replace a few weak links. Anything higher, and around 250hp, the rear end breaks, the clutch slips alot, and engine life drops dramatically.

Since my Miata is a daily driver, and if I were to ever get a supercharger, I'd aim for 6 to 8PSI. Any more than that, its more trouble than its worth. I couldn't afford to have the engine block to die on me without another backup car.

Gotta get the strokes optimized though 😉

Yah, I heard he started it up the other day and after a few seconds it sputtered and then went dead 😉
