i've got a curious thread running as winampa.exe in the task manager. does anyone know what this is, or do i have a trojan running on my system? i can't find winampa.exe anywhere on the system. does anyone know how to trace a process id to the file it's running from? i can't track this thread to its source. oh, this is windows2000, and that thread seems to appear whether or not i've been running winamp. any suggestions...?

winampa.exe is the Winamp Agent that is running to reclaim ANY of the file names that you've associated Winamp to. So if you've said that Winamp should play all *.mp3, *.mp2, *.mpg files and install some other program(RealAudio for example) that takes control of these files, the Winamp Agent will reclaim them for WInamp..

There is NOTHING wrong with this program, it is not a trojan horse so no worries there..

If you go to Winamp Preferences, go to Setup->Agent, there you'll see Enable Winamp Agent..if you don't want it anymore, then simply uncheck it..Regards

that's what i had thought it might be, but it isn't.. the agent option is unchecked in winamp prefs, so it shouldn't be appearing.

interesting nick by the way.

one more thing... i don't know the memory usage since i deactivated it when it appeared again, but i seem to recall it was using ~400k memory... i just manually activated the winampa.exe file in the winamp directory, and it uses 876k memory when idle, which implies it's not the same file..
