and the Beatles, check out Live at the Hollywood Bowl. They could barely hear themselves, yet they sound tight, in tune and dead on the money harmonically.
They didn't spend all the effort in getting their dance steps correct. They were more interested in the music.

We all know Mariah Carey can sing. She has the pipes for it. How do you think she got famous in the the first place? She wasn't Pop Diva until after she made her money.

She used to sing, she's lost it.

I always found that odd too. You would think it would be easier to actually sing, than trying to sync properly with an existing recording. But I guess if you're doing lot of moves it is hard to also sing at same time, so they just practice syncing with a prerecording instead.

For pop music the focus is much more on the looks and dancing than on the singing, and that has been the case for decades already. If you can sing very well you can still make it, but you need a lot of luck to break through.

Or you need to just sing metal or so instead :D

Its a one off kind of thing and not a full blown single act concert. Using lip sync instead of ensuring every bit of sound is done correctly is worlds easier. Especially for a NYE performance that is just about having some entertainment.

I can't stand Mariah Carey's music but people are being unreasonably harsh about this. It is standard practice at this point for these one off performances (also see Superbowl half time, RHCP got crap for not playing their instruments but it was a requirement that they don't play to even be allowed on the stage).

If this was a Mariah Carey concert the reaction would be qualified but as it is it is much ado about nothing.

She claims that she complained about the earpiece sound being choppy at the afternoon sound check but it wasn't fixed.

A lot of it is because they are PERFORMERS and don't just sing. They dance and run all over the stage. I realize the majority of you are fatasses and have never ever exercised a day in your life, but it is extremely hard to exercise and even talk at the same time, let alone sing a song, which these performers would basically be doing.

Next time you're on the treadmill (LOL), even just jogging, put on some headphones and try to sing a long to a song especially one that has some long winded notes like how Mariah Carey sings in some of her songs. You won't make it more than probably 5 seconds before you're out of breathe and have to turn the treadmill off.

Comparing something like the Beatles video up above where they are stationary just standing there playing instruments and singing isn't even comparable to running around a stage while singing.

(and yes there is some exaggeration in my post but the point still stands)

For example Mariah Carey, she probably sang those songs a million times. So why cant she just sing into the microphone? It seems them moment the vocal track stopped she froze like a deer caught in headlights as if she never sang at all in her entire life.

Because most can't sing worth shit, it's the backend processing that make them sound good. We have a not so strictly adhered to rule in this house that only people that you enjoy listening to live can be played on drinking nights. I was devastated when I first heard Alanis Morissette live the first time.

Then it should be advertised as a dance routine and not her performing. Being known as a singer the assumption is that she is singing and not lipsinking.
