Curious truck shopping issue

Well, it looks like I'll be in the market for a used pickup. My '91 Dakota just blew the trans they quoted me $1250 to fix it. With 143K mi., an engine that was showing lowering oil pressure, a stress cracked windshield (no stone chip), rust showing up on the bottom of the body and around the windshield, and two badly worn tires, I've decided to scrap the truck and find something a little newer.

Now, all the shopping I've done so far has been from the seat in front of my computer, but it seems pricing on trucks in the $2500-$4000 range seem all out of whack.

If you look at Consumer Reports at the mid 90s to 2000 trucks as far as reliability ratings go the order of best to least would be:

F150>Ranger>Silverado>S10

Yet pricing for similar mileage vehicles are going:

Silverado>Ranger>S10>F150

Looks like there is a '94-'99 F150 with between 75K-110K mi. in my future even though it's probably more truck than I need.

BTW-with 3 drivers in the house of which only one drives to work, this a forth and backup vehicle which will only be used when I occasionally need a truck or during inclement weather, when I don't want to take the Z28 out.

I've noticed the same thing, F150s seem way cheaper on the used market then they should be. I'm actually shopping for pretty much the same thing you're looking for. I have no use for a full size truck, a compact truck is plenty for occasional use but f150s are so cheap.

I wonder if its the gas prices. I still want a ranger since buying more truck then I need will probably cost me a bit more in gas.

My FIL's Silverado seems to take a beating and hold up well though. The guy drives that thing over roads that are nothing more then overgrown trails all day for work.

No such thing! Get the F150 and drive the heck out of it. Personally I like the looks of the Silverado over the F150, but that's just personal taste. Both trucks are good vehicles with plenty of parts out there should something go wrong.
