Curious question concerning custom firmware for routers

From time to time I've toyed with loading up modified firmware onto my Linksys WRT-54G v2 router but I've never actually done it. I doubt it's that big of a deal to install but after looking over the various modified firmware distributions out there I'm not sure if its really worth it. Do any of the distributions that are out there actually improve on the routing performance of this router or do they all just add on additional features like VPN?

if you arent having problems with your wrt-54g, then its just going to add some features.
some of those are finicky and even upgrading to factory firmware doesnt help, so in that case its worth using 3rd party firmware just for the sake of stability

most of the stuff should be pretty simple to install, so its not like youre going to kill an afternoon putting it on and setting it up
