Do you guys plug all hardware together first on the outside, before putting into the case? Or you put everything in the case and press the power button and hope everything will boot?

My case has a motherboard tray, so I put everything together on that outside of the case, put the tray in, and hook everything else up.

Door number two for the most part...
Exception could be if I was building one piece at a time, i.e. waiting for cash to order stuff

I put my moterboard in first because it has no tray. Plus, I have everything but the CPU. RAM, HDD or video card in right now and I have the wiring done. Now I can just place the stuff in and power her on. Should be a nice 1 hour installation including installing the OS.

i ust put everything in the case. it wastes time to put it together outside, and then stick it in the case later.

i put everything together in the case, mostly because of the way I have to route wires... i would have to take everything apart again. i put the motherboard in its tray, secure it, install CPU, then heatsink, RAM. Put motherboard in computer, install drives, then video card and any other pci stuff.

Install ram and cpu on mainboard, install backplate, hold mainboard over mounting area scoping out where standoffs go and put in standoffs. Install mainboard into chassis. Install drives, connect front panel wires, etc. Connect ribbon cables where needed, connect power cables to drives. Install cards and power up. Check front panel for reversed LED's etc. Install OS. DONE!

The only reason I can see of building outside the box is if you've got some untested, used parts. I've never had a new piece of hardware that was faulty (maybe I'm lucky) so it would just be a waste of my time to put it together twice. I usually have some cables stealthed behind the motherboard so I put in the standoffs and lay the board down, mount the drives and the PS, cable it up, route the wires, then screw the board down and install the cards.

I keep the motherboard out and anything that goes on it.... everything else goes in.

I usually build the contraption in space, then fly it to earth and plug it in, that way i can keep all the cords nice and neat.
