Curious about the origin of 'M-O-O-N, that spells <blank>' phrase

I originally thought it came directly from Stephen King's book The Stand, but yesterday someone told me it's actually just an old proverbial phrase that King simply decided to use repeatedly for his retarded character.

After looking on Google though I can only find information of it being in his book, so can someone confirm where it came from?

I've read a lot over the decades and have never seen the phrase used by anyone but King.

Perhaps the person was confusing it with "goodnight moon"

😕 what are we talking about?

Read The Stand by Stephen King and you'll understand. It's my favorite book of all time.

One of mine, too. Frighteningly easy to imagine happening IRL.
