I have 2 120mm fans for my dual rad. But the one seems whiney. How can I go about curing this. Is there something I can oil or lubricate? Suggestions? Edit: The fans are brand new.

I'd say no, most fan motors are NOT user servicable.

If the sound is from wear and tear, I'd say replace them

If it from sheer operation speed, get a rheostat and slow them down..but for that price, you could proably buy some quieter ones (Panaflo, Papst, and Antec make some nice and quiet 120mm fans, but most are really quiet just by the fact that they are 120mm).

Give it some prozac and check it again in an hour. Should have mellowed out by then.

On a more serious note, if the noise is MORE than it used to be, then you can oil the fan motor by peeling back the sticker on one side of the motor and putting a drop of household oil in there, then reapply the sticker. If the fan has always been that noisy, then you're SOL.

Isn't that just a short time fix?

possibly. its what people do to extend the life of near dead rattling fans. i think its not worth the trouble with fans so cheap and all.

I've done this many many times. I've seen it last forever (edit: provided the bearings are not shot). A needle applicator helps, and be sure to put the sticker back down to keep the dust and crud out.

The best oil to use is electric motor oil, it is free from solvents unlike most oils which will deplete the existing lubricant and can shortly after leak out itself.
