Hi all,

I need an inexpensive solution to a problem I'm having at work. A co-worker and I would like some ideas as to how we can set up a motion detector that will allow us to know when someone is coming our direction. We just need an LED or something that would light up when someone crosses a certain point. Any one have any ideas that would work? Any one have a better solution?

Thanks!

X10 sells cheapo motion detectors which you can link to your desktop... that's as close as I can think.

Hehe, thats what I was thinking.

Seriously, get some of those things like garage door opener sensors, probably from a Radioshack, find a way to hook em up to a light switch, and allow electricity to pass once the light is blocked. Also, what do you plan on using this for?

I know everyone here would like me to say it's because I surf porn all day - but that's not the case. We have a person in our office that is 'very difficult' and she is always storming in our cubes w/o notice and startles that piss out of us. I know that's not what y'all wanted to hear, but that's the truth. It got so bad that we're looking for a solution to give us time to prepare for her before she rages in.

You could get one of those motion sensor flood lights, run the leads to a 110v ac cord and just plug it in. Put the motion sensor part high up. Put the flood lights aiming out behind you. Then if someone sneaks up on you, not only do you know it but they get blinded for a moment while you flip screens, er, close browser, er, do nothing.

How about:

1) Buy floodlight motion sensor kit
2) Strip it out
3) Extend motionsensor cord to desired length (for location)
4) wire the 'light' part into a regular desktop lamp
5) wire the other part into a 110v ac cord.

Someone walks up, desktop light comes on, you were just reading.

Etc.

Or use one of those mirrors that stick to your screen, and are curved so you can see like 180 behind you. They often give them out at tradeshows and such.

The problem here is that they work both ways. If you can see them, they can see you.
Not good. My vote goes to the motion sensor.

Btw, is she hot?

when the X10 senses someone coming, have it play a *.wav file: "GET THE HELL OUTTA MY CUBICLE!!"

Maybe you should actually get some work done instead of wasting your company's business resources doing/downloading non-business things.

And then there are the motion detectors that have a rediculously fake barking dog sound. Maybe it will scare her away.

Just scream at the top of your lungs like a little girl everytime she startles you, start shaking uncontrollably, and as the tears roll down your cheeks, tell her you need her to warn you before she comes because you're afraid your heart will stop.
