i wonder how many diamonds on rings today are synthetic (chemically they are real diamond, but are made by compressing CO2 gas, IIRC)

i'd suggest using a synthetic diamond, instead.

they actually look better than normal diamonds, shine brighter, etc. and cheaper, and none of the guilt relating to debeers monopoly and such in africa. (if you care about that sort of thing)

I gave my wife one when I proposed. It was actually about $19 after tax from the local WalMart.

She said "Yes" so then she got the real deal which was actually under the CZ in the ring box.

CZ engagement ring? Absolutely. Diamonds are a waste of money. If you want a CZ that looks like a diamond get one that isn't too big and is more or less diamond colored (instead of pink).

Trust me, after 7 years of waiting, she got her money's worth.

May I recommend Moissanite Link. MORE brilliant than a diamond, cut better, and almost as hard. Plus a lot cheaper, and no guilt about supporting the diamond trade.

Wife said it completely depends. If you're dirt broke and in love, then yes a CZ is completely acceptable. OTOH, if you spend a ton of money on things like video games or electronics or such, then you should cut that out for a few months to get the real thing.

Secondly, she says if you go CZ, it needs to be believable. No pink, no humongous rocks, etc, etc.

The wife has a CZ ring. She picked it out. She's probably lost $10K worth of jewlry that I've given her over last 25 years. She decided it just wasn't worth the effort anymore. Besides she's really anti DeBeers these days.

I got the wife a CZ until we could afford and select the custom diamond ring she wanted (custom ring, 3 plumeria gold with a custom setting in the middle plumeria).

Nobody knew it was CZ, and more than a few people raved at the beauty of her "rock." One went so far to remark how cheap CZ's look compared to the "real thing"...it was funny.

Nothing against your wife, but some of us choose not to buy diamonds based on ethical and civic (plus the fact that I don't like the idea of buying price gouging carbon) reasons, not all of us can't afford it.
