First, let me say my personal experience with Minecraft is very limited, so if I draw comparisons to what I know about Minecraft and say something blatantly wrong, I apologize.
Next, CubeWorld is apparently being developed solely by a husband/wife team, no kickstarter, no Steam greenlight, etc. Their registration website and store is up and down a LOT simply because they're going it alone.
Now, on to the meat and potatoes.
CubeWorld is a Voxel based RPG style sandbox adventure. Worlds are generated using a random seed, you create a character of one of 4 common RPG classes (warrior/rogue/mage/archer), then you're dumped into a friggin HUGE world to make your way.
There are "quests" so to speak, which take form of NPC's asking if you've been to a specific area (not really a quest per say), or a "boss" to kill which you will be notified about when you get to a specific area.
Right now there is no "world-building" in the game, I don't know if there ever will be. There is crafting of items/weapons/armor.
The game is mostly single-player centric. You can play multiplayer co-op. One of the developer's goals is to potentially create a "large" multiplayer server (more than 4 players), but that currently has stability issues.
I'm enjoying the game. I've wasted probably 4 hours yesterday in it while it was raining outside and had nothing better to do.
