Wow! :Q

I think he should stay just on pure "coolness" factor ... hell, he can write a book about it and make a great living!
Anyone smell a Tom Hanks movie here? :D

Just imagine how desperate he had to be! That's very sad. :(

Most likely he will stay, and in the end, his family will join him.

I think he is an idiot and they should kick his A55 out immediately. If we start letting retards like this stay in our country, it will only give inspiration to the Chinese, Mexican, Haitian, and other immigrants that risk life and limb to enter this country. They need to follow the correct procedures in filing for political asylum or to get refugee priviledges, not stuff themselves in containers, walk across deserts and jump over fences, cling on to homemade wooden boats and hope it will reach Americas shores, or, hang on to planes. These people need to know that they are NOT welcome if this is how they choose to enter the country. Most of them end up dying trying stupid things like this. May as well have stayed in their POS country and committed suicide, why waste the effort?

Umm, how else is this guy supposed to do it? He lives in CUBA. He can't "apply for refugee status". There is no office in Cuba called "The cuba-sucks-i-wanna-leave administration". The only way to apply for refugee status when you're in cuba is to leave, and leaving is hard. That's why he did what he did, because he didn't want to live in that place anymore.

Instead of asking why people are let in who do what he does, why not ask "What brings these people to such a point where they'll do what they do?".

despite the tone of this post i agree.

what about all the other people who are waiting to enter this country legally? where do they stand? they should have more of a right to be here than he does.

((...and everyday i turn into more of a conservative))

Lets get a couple things straight before i get flamed.

yes, i was a little offensive in my post but only cuz everyone here was rooting for the guy which IMHO is stupid.

My parents are immigrants. they came here totally legally, my dad went to college here, and they didn't come for better opportunities (from well off family), but for a change, from India, so i'm not anti immigrant.

My point is you people are not thinking rationally. How can we let this guy, lets call him, Jose stay here? Word will get back to his village and surrounding areas and then you'll see 10,000 Joses doing the same thing. We need to send him back fast, and, make a big scene about it, to scare off any would be doers. Of course, there will still be some that will continue to try it, but it will be less.

Regarding what you said about how is he supposed to go about doing it? Easy. He gets in contact with some international human rights organization and they file a case with him to the INS. If the INS deems he is worthy to stay (his conditions are bad enuff, he doesn't pose a threat, etc.) then let him stay. THAT is how it is supposed to be done.

Well I don't think you'll see 10k people hanging onto planes or even on life rafts in vain attempts to get into Canada, since it's a good trip from Canada to cuba. Chances are any cuban will just go to the US instead. I've been very exposed to the immigration process myself and I've noticed that if you're wealthy and well educated it's a lot easier than if you are neither. The average Mexican or Cuban really has few opportunites to legally get out of their country. Although they aren't being beaten daily or fed to dogs for the entertainment of the king their countries still suck, so they have a pretty good reason to leave. But there are few legal ways to do it. For a cuban I'm not really aware of any way that a significant populous of the country could get into Canada. You said that if the INS deems him worthy (assuming he's going to the US) then let him stay - but my question is how did he get to the US in the first place? Probably on some raft or smuggled in; afterall it's not often that Cubans are allowed to take vacations to the US are they?

Geez, I just thought the story was interesting, I didn't mean to have the topic flamed to death!

And for the record, I did not state my opinion on the matter, rather pointing out that the entire situation is sad.

That wasn't only not funny, but ignorant. You have no idea how many of those people die each year trying to enter this country do you? Yeah, the guys that can cling to a plane make headlines, but what about the thousands that succumb to dehydration in the desert, dehydration/disease/starvation in containers, or boats (mostly Asian), gangs (mexican and chinese human trafficking gangs), boat accidents, etc.? By the way, my sister works with refugees and that is the usualy process of getting legal entrance into a country, not by doing what this stupid guy did. I'm not saying I don't sympathize with this guy, i do, but i am saying that i don't want to see another cuban person or chinese, or mexican dead just for trying to enter this country. its not worth it.

You're misssing the point. They file for political asylum BEFORE they leave their country, or while they are in a neighboring country or something.

You make a solid point about him jumping ahead of people who apply legally, but I think you're ignoring reality some here. If it was as simple as calling up your local human rights association and requesting a transfer, then all these people wouldn't be dying on their way over here on inner tubes. These people don't want to die. I can only imagine the desperation that makes them see death out at sea as an acceptable alternative to staying.

OK then what - will INS send down a plane and pick the guy up out of cuba? He still has to find a way to the US (or Canada).

You know what? You're absolutely right. It isn't east to get political asylum. It is hard as hell. Not only for Americans but also for Europeans (where my sister works on these cases). BUT, how can we justify letting this man in when people from worse countries (AF, China, various African nations) have been trying for years? How can we justify letting him stay when it will give hope to others that will try other, if not this way, stupid ways of getting here.
