If Cuba's leader dislikes the U.S so much, why does he allow the U.S to occupy Guantanamo Bay?
The US conquered Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish-Cuban-American War and occupied the island until 1902. In 1901, Cuba ratified the Platt Amendment (named after the US Senator who proposed it) as part of their new constitution, giving the US right of approval over most foreign affairs of Cuba and also giving the US the right to purchase or lease lands as naval stations.
The US acquired rights in perpetuity to Guantanamo Bay station in 1903 and has kept it ever since. The reason that Cuba hasn't retaken Guantanamo Bay is fear of US military.
After leaving its initial 1898-1902 occupation, the US was quickly back to occupy the country again from 1906-1909, to land troops in Havana in 1912, occupied the country again from 1917-1923, sent naval forces in 1933 to ensure that a new dictator approved by the US would be placed in power, and of course in 1961 tried to invade again in the disastrous Bay of Pigs. However, repelling a CIA sponsored invasion is one thing; taking over a US naval base is another.
