i'm building a computer for my friend and she wants to keep the total price to around $1000, so i'm seeing what i can reduce prices in (the monitor?)

Just for any input, this is what i've set up so far:

$120 Thunderbird 1.2ghz

$30 HS
TaiSol (i want it quiet, probably not gonna o/c)

$115 iwill kk266
(is the $160 K7Master DDR mobo worth it? b/c ram is about the same)

$60 ram 256mb Mushkin Basic 133 vs $60 pc2100 266

$60 SoundBlaster Live! Value

Matrox G450 - Excellent 2D - $70 (what are the advantages of a good video card? can i just get a generic one? (no 3d performance necessary) or even one integrated on a mobo?)

$100 cdrw - Liteon 12x10x32

$60 DVD 16X Pioneer Slot Loading

$100 IBM 60GXP 20GB vs. $130 40gb 60gxp

But i was wondering how much the quality of cheap monitors compares to a good monitor? She wants to watch DVD's on this. Would a cheap 19inch be fine? should i invest the extra 50-100 for a 955df? I just need a monitor of good quality, run at 1280 X 1024 max, but maybe only 1024 x 768) The ctx would be VL950SL.

950p is not a flat screen. The 955DF is (DynaFlat tube)- it's a very sweet monitor! My friend has one, I like it a good deal more than my 900p (which is a model that is 1 year older than the 950p- same basic monitor).

Your monitor is what you are always looking at, don't skimp on it. Go for the 955DF- it is mighty sweet, not too terribly expensive either.

I just bought a 955DF and it's sweet. I have a low quality 19 before and there is no comparision. I say spend the extra cash.
