I've had a Pontiac g8 GT on the brain for the past year or so. Started to do some price checking, and realized that a similar year (2009) and mileage cts (with DI motor) is about the same price. I know the g8 is faster...but is it a better car? The caddy might be a bit pretentious for me....and the g8 is a rarer car around here. What say ye Garage forum?

Well, which do you want, a GM car, or a Holden car? Is the CTS a V?

How is the parts availability situation for the G8?

as a g8 owner, im probably biased. price being equal, id still pick the g8 over the cts (assuming we are talking base cts, not a V. i'd take a V over the G8 tho). mine is an 08 GT and only has about 27k miles but its been problem free. engine stuff is standard GM LS based stuff so those parts should be easy to come by. not to mention the good reliability of the LS motors and relative "simple-ness" of a pushrod motor. other things that are specific to the G8 (body panels, interior pieces) can be acquired from down under if needed since the car is still in production down there. frankly, im not too concerned. unless things changed in the last year, GXP specific body parts were dirt cheap and stocked in the US.

I'd get a CTS. G8 specific parts is usually back ordered, at least it is whenever I asked a GM tech working on a G8.

If he is getting a CTS-V for the same price as a G8 of similar miles, he should jump on that probably 9 times out of 10 even if he planned on re-selling it immediately.

Being that he is more than likely looking at a CTS, non-V; I'd say he needs to figure out what he wants from his car. They are different beasts.

Yeah I was definately not looking at a V, although I see that the last gen CTS-V's (2004 - 2008) are pretty affordable, but at 400 hp they didn't have that much more soup than a G8 GT. A GXP would be nice, but they seem to be horrifically overpriced for what you're getting over a GT. I'm looking to pick up an 09 GT with a reasonable amount of miles for < 20k. These cars do seem to have held their value pretty well relative to everything else that GM builds.

GM did not build those. That was Holden in Australia. (OK, GM owns holden, but it operates mostly separately.)

G8 all the way.. While I am not a fan of either and will never consider either in my life, to me, only thing that CTS is better than G8 is that Cadillac brand is not defunt.. lol
