It doesn't work. Nothing happens. Typing TaskMGR in run doesn't help. I've found no malware on my system, after using Adaware, Spybot, and Windows Defender. Any hints?

As far as I know none of those applications are for antivirus/trojan/worm, including the beta version of windows defender.

You could try downloading a third party task manager? I cant remember the name of it, but i found one that is like a very detailed version of it. Im sure if you try some google combinations youll find it 🙂

Try booting up in safe mode and running some adware and virus scanners.

Alright, it's fixed. Spybot caught some strange malware, doen't rember what it was, but initially my defenitions wre out of date.

Ok, now it's borked again. I ran sfc /scannow, no change. I used Trend Micro House Call, it found nothing. John, thanks for the hint, but I don't get an error message. I would rather not download a 3rd party task manager, I would like the windows one back.

I bloody well did. I fixxed it, again, BTW. Spybot incompetently only got a part of the files, so I had to manually delete some. Luckily the idiot that made this malwar named the installer 'w00t' so it was sort of obvious.

Heh, I thought that you couldn't find any malware on your pc? 😛 I'm glad you finally found it. 🙂

Hmmm... And I was going to suggest turning over the keyboard and shaking the carp out... 😉

Edit - btw, the only ways I know of for doing this are rootkit, replacing/adding a Gina (Winlogon), and hooking the Shell (also Winlogon). The symptom of the last one is that C-A-D works at Gina logon, but not later. Rootkit may work the same way (depends on how good it is and what it hooked.)

Ha Ha! Fixxed again! It would seem there were 2 different pieces of malware producing the same symptoms. HijackThis! finally got it.

While you are still in the mode, build yourself a copy of Bart's PE and add Hijack this to it. There is an ultimate boot disc that is based on Bart's the included an older copy, but don't remember where (dogpile it.)

Bart's PE
