How can I install a Novell Service Pack from the CD-Rom drive on a server? When I place the CD in the drive it sees it and mounts the volume. But it acts like it doesnt see the drive when going through these steps for install the service pack:

Yyping NWCONFIG at the system console screen.
Choose Product Options: (Other optional installation items.)

Install a product not listed.

Hit F3 key and type in:
?

The only way I can install a serive pack is to first copy the SP from a workstations CD-ROM to the server on the SYS drive. Then do the following steps like above but typeing in SYS:\NW5SP5 and works fine. But cant figure out how to install a SP from the CD-Rom on server.

If it matters the Service Packs I downloaded and burned to a CD from Novells site.

Thanks!

Okay, it's been a while so I might be rusty. But I've done this hundreds of times so maybe I can remember the correct steps.

First off, you need to make sure that you expanded the SP correctly before you burned it. I always used to run the self-extractor from the DOS prompt, redirecting the output to a text file for perusal at my convenience. This is good because you can add the extraction details file to the CD when you burn it, adding to your CYA rating.

Once you have verified the extraction went 100% good, burn your files to the CD. Remember that the directory structure is very important, since the install script references it. Also, it is a good idea to make the CD volume label conform to 8.3 standards. And you can go ahead and make it meaninful while you are thinking about it.

Now your CD is ready to be labelled with a black Sharpie of your choosing. This part is nerve-wracking, since other people might see your handwriting and wonder what kind of education you really have!

So now you need to mount the CD as a volume on the server. In a NW4.x environment, you have to make sure CDROM.NLM is loaded and configured correctly. I like to unload CDROM.NLM, insert the CD, load CDROM.NLM, do a CD device list to see what the hardware ID for your drive is, then CD mount <id>. The index will be built, memory will be consumed, and you should be able to see your drive when you show the volumes. The when you need to tell the install app where the files are, point it to &quot;<cd volume label>:\<location of the .IPS file>&quot;, for instance &quot;NW4SP8:\&quot; for a CD labelled NW4SP8 and assuming the .IPS file was in the root.

For NW5, you should just insert the CD and it will mount it automagically. The rest of the above paragraph still applies.

So I hope that gets us started in the right direction. The first thing to check is if your CDROM drive is being recognized properly, with the correct drivers, etc. BTW, your config.sys is blank now, right? It better be!
