ctoss2k.sys crashing Vista

All of a sudden, I keep getting bsod. Thought it was my overclock but everything was under specs... reset all to default, still kept getting bsod... second thought towards it, i look at the bsod this time and read its the file 'ctoss2k.sys' that continually is crashing my pc.

Vista Ultimate 64
8gb
e8400
?
?
?

I've tryied deleting the file, but widnows vista won't let me. I've googled it and i keep getting references to XP.

I remember using the install CD that said it wasn't compatible with Vista...

I've uninstalled drivers, reinstalled latest, and not even a min, and I crash again.

anyone familiar with this problem that can help!?!?

thanks a bunch

Seems as if someone else had a similar problem to you with Vista 32 Bit.

Some general info on ctoss2k.sys:

Are you using a Soundblaster X-Fi card?
Try here for the official X-Fi Vista drivers:

If you can't find the correct drivers in the above link (Soundblaster is shit when it comes to drivers), then have a look at this:

I got this BSOD a few times in the last few weeks. I have a Creative PCI X-fi Xtreme gamer.

Maybe a recent windows update is causing issues or something.

no... i think it might be the recent Microsoft update... but what I don't get is my other machine runs the same OS, and same sound card but doesn't crash.

You can try uninstalling the Windows update in 'Add or Remove Programs' in the Control Panel. I'm assuming Vista is similar to XP; I don't know for sure since I only have XP on my home and work computers.

i seen it was going to look like that - the old trouble shoot one by one technique, good thing is that it crashes right away so it might be less of a painful thing

Any luck sorting this problem out, BTRY?

You wanna hear something really funny - like Microsoft fixed this???

The other day I had my 5.1 platinum card in and I was getting an automatic update from MS and so im like, hmph ok, another update, i wonder what it is. I look at the update and it says 'WDM driver for Creative' and it raised my interest. And I'm thinking how could they know that.

Everytime I crashed and rebooted, i would always send the report to Microsoft. I reinstalled my X-Fi X gamer card and I haven't crashed since.

Interesting huh 🙂

now that's support!

i am still in awe about it... whether this was just isolated to just me or everyone was getting this problem, i feel special - lol

Thanks for the help again daw 🙂

i hope the D0's don't come out soon, (im sorry, I know you are waiting for the i7 950 to come out and honestly it sounds really temping 😀 even givin my $$$ situation)

I am already in agreeance in giving up my 8400 platform to my older brother and that leaves me with no 24/7 email machine... (hah email machine) What I have left is my MIIF, which i hope I sell, and then a brand new NIB Q9650 waiting for a new home. Keeping it and getting a UD3 775 board would still be a good idea but then I need a vid card for it. I guess either way I'll end up needing a vid card, 🙁 poop

You should go with two of these babies in SLI, cooled with a second liquid cooling loop. Your plastic flexible friend needs a work out 😀

Wow thats some big bucks! I already got 3000$ going to a new roof but that investment will turn around and make buying one of those real easy 😀

Can you believe I got an update like that? It had to be a more widespread problem.

almost ready to start cutting into my PC-60 for my 220 rad & 655 setup - it gets easier and easier everytime!
